LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A longtime neighborhood eyesore on Sherman Avenue is finally gone, bringing relief and gratitude to nearby residents.

Demolition crews tore down a dilapidated and vacant house that had stood abandoned for years. For Damon Cruell, who lives across the street, the demolition marked the end of a problem he had been concerned about since purchasing his home in 2016.

Demolition of vacant Sherman Avenue house brings relief to neighborhood residents

Cruell said the property had been vacant when he moved into the neighborhood and had continued to deteriorate over the years. He frequently contacted local officials in hopes that something could be done about the structure, which he believed posed safety and health concerns.

"I have been calling every year to see what they could do about it because I saw the dangers of wild animals, possums, raccoons, and vultures over the past year have been circling around our yard and circling over that house. There was a big hole in the roof and they would just, I've seen them take dead animals in and drop them off in that roof, the vultures, and then they just go back whenever they want to eat. I was really happy, that they come and got rid of this monstrosity," Cruell said.

The Allen County Land Bank became involved after being approached by American Township for assistance with the property.

Officials classified the project as a "hot" demolition because crews were unable to safely enter the building to determine whether asbestos was present. As a precaution, Environmental Protection Agency requirements were followed throughout the demolition process, including bagging and securing debris before it was transported from the site.

Residents say the removal of the blighted property will improve both the appearance and safety of the neighborhood.
