LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Local children who need a little extra help with reading are finding support from some gentle giants at Fassett Farm.
The farm is spreading the word about its horse-powered reading program, one of several initiatives offered through its equestrian therapy program. The program is designed to help children improve phonics, decoding, comprehension and reading fluency in a safe and supportive environment.
Organizers say horses play an important role in helping children feel comfortable and confident while they develop their reading skills. By combining literacy instruction with interaction with the animals, the program helps break down barriers that may prevent children from enjoying reading and building confidence in their abilities.
One of the program's most popular activities allows children to read directly to the horses. Organizers say the activity encourages young readers to focus on plot development, characters and comprehension while practicing their skills in a relaxed setting.
“Horses are non-judgmental and help to mirror emotions. They help to ease the kids and focus on that emotional learning component,” says Nadene Goecke, Program Coordinator/Instructor.
Those interested in learning more about the horse-powered reading program can contact Fassett Farm or visit its website or Facebook page for additional information.
