LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A community event aimed at supporting survivors of domestic violence is returning for its third year in Lima.

The Girl Can Cook Memorial Run/Walk will take place May 16 at Faurot Park, offering participants the option to run or walk either a 5K or one-mile course while raising money for Crossroads Crisis Center. The event also will feature a food truck, a 50/50 drawing and raffle prizes for attendees.

Organizers say the family-friendly event was created to honor the memory of a Lima woman who was killed in an act of domestic violence.

“So, this run is honoring my cousin's memory, Amy Market Jorgensen. She grew up here in Lima and unfortunately was taken from us in an act of domestic violence. She had a love for running and cooking, and we thought, what better way to honor her and help others out at the same time than starting this run. It's been very well received by the community and all the funds that we raise for this through this event, stay here in Allen County and go to Crossroads Crisis Center,” says Danielle McClure, Girl Can Cook Memorial Run/Walk.

Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m. The cost is $25 without a shirt or $40 with a shirt. Participants can preregister online at RunSignup.com by searching “Girl Can Cook,” or sign up the day of the event.
