Girls Scouts and Johnny Appleseed teaming up to connect girls with nature

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio and Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District are hosting a hike through the woods on August 13th.

ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Two agencies focused on nature are joining forces to get girls outside and breathing some fresh air.

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio and Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District are hosting a hike through the woods on August 13th. It's scouting at its best as you venture out into nature to see and experience new things. Organizers say they find it amazing how many kids don't get outside, haven't been in the woods, or have even taken a hike along a trail. They hope this event will get girls out and interested in scouting.

"That's what we're trying to do with the Girl Scouts. We're trying to connect the girls so they feel comfortable in the woods, that they are excited about getting out and learning about our world, and then they can take care of it," said Doreen Martin, a naturalist at Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.

"We're looking for girls of all ages, kindergarten through high school. Bring a friend, bring a parent, come out, and we want to get the girls outdoors. We want them breathing fresh air and getting in nature," said Heather Jenkins, community development manager for the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio.

The hike will be on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at Camp Woodhaven at 1870 W Robb Ave, Lima, OH 45805. There is no cost for the hike, and remember to come dressed for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring your bug spray.
