LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – In an effort to curb the abundance of unwanted puppy births, the city of Lima and Allen County are working together to provide dog owners with options.
The city is providing $5,000 to the Allen County Dog Warden to manage their spay and neuter program for canines. The vouchers are valued at $100 and can be applied toward the cost of the procedure at a participating veterinarian.

Julie Shellhammer, Allen County Dog Warden, said, “Well, it’s a state law that you have to have your dog license. So that’s pretty much the only requirement. They have to live in the city of Lima and have a dog license. And they could come in, they need a vet appointment already made, come in and just give us the dates and the address, and we’ll get you get them a voucher.”
Dog owners can contact the Allen County Dog Warden at (419) 223-8528 to receive a voucher. Cat owners can contact the City of Lima’s Parks and Recreation Office at the city garage, 900 South Collett Street, at (419) 221-5195. Residents must live in Lima and meet low-income qualifications to be eligible.
