Lima Memorial marks Wear Red Day to raise awareness about heart disease in women

Dozens of Lima Memorial Health System associates, doctors, and administrators gathered for their annual "Heart Photo."

Dr. Hemraj Makwana, a cardiologist with the Lima Memorial Health System Heart & Vascular Institute, explains, "90 percent of adult females, they have one or more risk factors for heart disease. So it’s very important to know that you know about the risk factors, you know about the symptoms and fix it before something bad happens. So basically, it's mostly about the prevention of the cardiovascular care in women."

Women’s symptoms can vary from a man’s, as they may experience back, jaw, and stomach pain rather than chest pain. Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a family history of heart disease. February is American Heart Month, and health officials urge everyone to make heart-healthy choices all year long.
