LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – As the former Macy’s department store is demolished, dozens of Lima and Allen County residents are pausing to reflect on decades of memories tied to the iconic building.
Originally built in 1971 as a Lazarus department store, the structure served as an anchor for the Lima Mall. Over the years, it became a familiar sight and a destination for shoppers, offering clothing, housewares, furniture, and more. Topping it all off was the beloved Garden Café on the third floor, known for its famous chicken salad sandwiches, bread pudding, and broccoli cheese soup. As crews dismantled the building, many longtime residents shared fond memories of their time there.

Originally built in 1971 as a Lazarus department store, the structure served as an anchor for the Lima Mall.
“Me and my wife, we'd come out here, especially around Christmas time, and go up into the restaurant and have dinner,” said Mike Luchini. “When they closed that, that was kind of sad, and now to see this come down, it's really sad.”
“I miss it. I used to shop here all the time, and our skating club would meet on Wednesdays after skating,” said Betty McDonald.
Nancy Kennedy added simply, “I don't know, it’s just a beautiful store. I loved to go in there.”

For Robert Friedman, the demolition marks the end of a full-circle moment. “I’ve lived in Lima all my life. So, I remember it being built, and watched the mall progress over the years,” he said. “At least I think it's a good thing for the community that Target is coming in. Maybe it'll help invigorate the area a little bit.”
For some, a piece of history is now a keepsake. During the early days of the demolition, lucky onlookers were able to take home a brick from the old Lazarus/Macy’s building — a tangible memory of a landmark that stood for more than 50 years.
