LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Lima Senior High School seniors got a firsthand look at what it means to be an adult — balancing bills, making tough financial choices, and learning to live within a budget.

Superior Credit Union and The Ohio State University Extension brought their Real Money Real World program to Lima City Schools, giving students a simulated experience of managing adult finances. Each student was assigned a “life,” complete with a career, salary, and family, and had to navigate real-world expenses such as housing, childcare, groceries, and unexpected costs like car repairs and medical bills.

The goal of the program is to teach students how to make smart financial decisions before they graduate and enter the workforce.

“It’s really kind of just helping us learn for the future, since we’re graduating next year, most of us — how to budget our money since we’re going to be out in the real world by ourselves, and also incorporating your kids into that and stuff, if you plan on having any,” said senior Alisandra VanMeter. “We’re also kind of learning the difference of insurances, high deductible versus low deductible, stuff like that.”

Superior Credit Union and OSU Extension take the Real Money Real World program to schools throughout Allen County and surrounding areas to educate students on personal finance management and financial responsibility.
