Motion-Preserving Disc Replacement, Now FDA-Approved for Two-Level Treatment, Offers Relief for Cervical Disc Disease
Dr. Fumich Performs First Two-Level Cervical Disc Replacement Using Centinel Spine’s Prodisc® C Portfolio in Lima, Ohio
Lima, OH – November 2025 – Dr. Fumich, a board-certified and fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon at the Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio, has successfully performed the region’s first two-level cervical total disc replacement using Centinel Spine’s prodisc® C portfolio. This achievement marks a significant advancement in motion-preserving spine care for patients in Lima and surrounding communities.
The patient was experiencing debilitating symptoms from degenerative disc disease (DDD) in the cervical spine. By implanting both the prodisc C Vivo and prodisc C SK devices, Dr. Fumich utilized Centinel Spine’s Match-the-Disc™ technology—an approach that allows surgeons to select implants that best match each patient’s unique anatomy. This personalized technique is designed to preserve spinal motion, reduce pain, and support long-term function.
Dr. Fumich explained, “Cervical disc disease and the resulting nerve compression can lead to significant pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms. For many years, the standard surgical treatment for these symptoms was a cervical spine fusion, a procedure that permanently joins two vertebrae and eliminates motion at the treated level.” Total Disc Replacement (TDR) offers a motion-preserving alternative by replacing the damaged disc with an artificial implant.
“The latest generation of cervical disc arthroplasty (total disc replacement) allows us to preserve motion by replacing the damaged disc rather than fusing the spine,” stated by Dr. Fumich. “Maintaining natural movement at the treated level also reduces stress on the adjacent discs, lowering the risk of future degenerative changes and potentially decreasing the need for future surgeries.”
With the recent FDA approval of the prodisc C Vivo for two-level disc replacement, more patients are now eligible for this motion-preserving surgery. “The outcomes I’ve seen have been excellent, with very high patient satisfaction in both one- and two-level cases,” said Dr. Fumich. “Recovery is much quicker than with fusion—most patients are driving within a week and often return to full-time work within two weeks.”
“This technology allows us to preserve motion in the cervical spine while restoring function,” said Dr. Fumich. “For appropriate candidates, disc replacement can offer a meaningful alternative to fusion with excellent long-term outcomes. Being able to perform this two-level procedure here in Lima means our patients don’t have to travel to major metropolitan centers for advanced spine care.”
