LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - If you're interested in kayaking this summer but don't know where to start, Ottawa Metro Park is the place for you.

The Johnny Appleseed Park District is offering a beginners kayaking class at Ottawa Metro Park's Lima Lake. The first two classes took place Friday morning and two more will be offered on Friday, June 26 at 9 AM and 10:30 AM. The class covers parts of the boat, paddling techniques, how to get in and out of the water, and proper use of safety gear. Park employees say that kayaking and other outdoor activities may improve your physical and mental health.

New kayakers invited to explore the water through classes at Ottawa Metro Park

"Nature helps us in multiple ways; it's our physical health, our mental health, calming our mind and giving us joy," said nature education supervisor Lindsey Gallaugher. "When we're out on the water like this, we'll see so many things and it's just a beautiful feeling to be out in the summer, in the fresh morning air and the breeze, and kind of feel like a kid again and feel free when you're out on the water."

Kayaks, paddles and life jackets will be provided by the park district. All ages are welcome, and no experience is required. Those interested can register online at jampd.com or call the park office at (419) 221-1232.
