Ohio campaign moves to repeal property taxes

The Ohio Citizens for Property Tax Reform has taken charge of the effort to eliminate property taxes in the state.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation’s most recent annual report, assessed values have climbed almost 40 percent in five years, while tax collections have risen more than 21 percent. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine expressed concerns about eliminating property taxes and the implications for public schools.

"If we're going to support our schools, if we're going to take some money away from real estate, we've got to figure out other places to to come up with that money. So that's that's always the question, when people make proposed bills and come up with solutions, how does that leave our schools? Our schools rely on property tax. They also rely on state income tax, and these are the two ways that we support our schools in Ohio," said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

The proposed solution from the Citizens for Property Tax Reform would add a constitutional amendment prohibiting future taxes on real property.
