LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Twenty years after the passage of the Real ID Act, U.S. citizens will soon be required to present specific documentation to fly within the continental United States.
Local travel agent Stewart Roberts spoke to the Lima Kiwanis Club about changes to air travel in 2025, with the biggest update being the deadline for the Real ID requirement. The Real ID Act, passed in 2005 following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission, has faced multiple delays but is now set to take effect on May 7. Roberts emphasized the importance of being prepared to ensure travelers can board their flights without issues.

"Cause you don't want to be there on the day that you're supposed to fly out and find out I can't fly to Florida. I'm not talking about international I'm not saying having to go to Canada, Mexico, something where you need a passport. Travel within the United States have just changed, where you need what's called a Real ID, which is a driver's license and in the top corner, if you have a golden star, you're good. If you don't, you're not you," said Stewart Roberts, owner of Stu's Cruise, Getaways & Travel.
The color of the star in the corner of the ID may vary by state. More information on how to become Real ID-compliant can be found on the Department of Homeland Security’s website at dhs.gov.
