SPENCERVILLE, Ohio (WLIO)- A Spencerville fifth grader is making a big impact on his community.
Jack Waggamon started the Bearcats Care Closet two years ago to give students access to hygiene items and clothing when they need them. He first told his mom he wanted to help classmates who might not have basic items at home.
Since then, through donations, fundraisers and even money he earned selling his fair chickens, the closet has grown to include clothing, socks, towels and shelves of food. This Thanksgiving, Jack and two of his friends are packing meal boxes for families in need after he learned some students and their families are struggling with rising costs and cuts to benefits.
“How it started was I asked my mom, like, ‘Hey, I kind of want to do something for the community, like a shoe drive or something that can help my school.’ And she's like, ‘What if we do like a care closet?’ I'm like, ‘Yeah.’ And so it started with personal hygiene items, like toothpaste, deodorant, soap, conditioner, shampoo, and it's already led up to clothes and towels and underwear and socks,” Jack said.
“He's always been empathetic, even from a young age. He has a heart for his community, his classmates. Since he was really little, he's been like that,” said Amanda Waggamon, Jack's mom.
