SPENCERVILLE, Ohio (WLIO) — A group of Spencerville graduates is inviting community members to help clean up the Auglaize River later this month through a volunteer effort aimed at removing trash from the waterway.
The Clean Your Streams event is scheduled for June 20 and encourages participants to spend the day on the river collecting litter and helping improve the local environment.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers will be able to dispose of collected trash at four designated locations along the river. Organizers said the cleanup effort has been years in the making and grew out of their experiences spending time on the river.
“We've been kayaking on this river for a long time, since we were in high school, and every time we go out, there's garbage. You see it all the time. So, I figured, we love being on the river, and I’m sure other people do, so why not try to get a big group together to make it a bit better," said Isaiah Pugh.
Those planning to participate are encouraged to bring trash bags, sunscreen and, if needed, kayaks. Organizers also remind volunteers to respect surrounding private property while taking part in the cleanup.
Additional information about the event is available on the NWOH Clean Your Streams Facebook page.
