SPENCERVILLE, Ohio (WLIO) — Local veterans organizations marked Flag Day by providing a respectful retirement for worn and damaged American flags.
Members of VFW Post 6772 and American Legion Post 191 hosted a Flag Retirement Ceremony in Spencerville. Throughout the year, the organizations collect U.S. flags that are worn, torn or faded and in need of proper disposal.
The ceremony serves as a dignified way to retire American flags while honoring the sacrifices and values they represent. Organizers said the event ensures each flag is treated with respect for its service and significance to the nation.
“It is doing the retirement with the most respect you can. We'll be doing a 21 gun salute, playing taps. Then the community or whoever wants come out from the American Legion, VFW, come out here and bring any of their flags they have that need retired. A lot of people lost their lives, given their lives for this country under these flags. That's why we like to do the flag retirement ceremony as respectfully as possible,” said Eric Bohyer, post commander of VFW Post 6772.
Organizers said they aim to hold a flag retirement ceremony once each year, weather permitting.
