LIMA , Ohio (WLIO) - Lima's Star-Spangled Spectacular kicked off with the 32nd Freedom 5K race at Faurot Park.
Over 500 participants around the area ran or walked the course, which started at Cole Street and finished right back in Faurot Park.
Award ceremonies were held after the race for the fastest runners in different age groups. For many families, the race is a way to bond and spend quality time together during the holiday.
"About 20 years ago, 15 of us ran and/or walked, and it was kind of a really special thing, so we tried to do it again this year," said Kathy Thompson, a participant in the Freedom 5K.
"It's all about getting the shirts that match and just doing something together. Later on, we'll have a picnic together."
To others, it's a way for them to focus on their health and challenge themselves while also supporting the community.
"I haven't ran in a long time and I just want to see where I'm at and progress from there. It's been 2 or 3 years that I've actually ran a mile or two, so I just want to see where I am and go on that. Also, I just want to support Lima," said D'Anthony Savage, another participant.
While participation in the event dropped after the COVID-19 pandemic, registration has continued to rise back up.
Officials say this year's event was the largest turnout they've seen in the last five years, and the growing interest is a result of the hard work from workers, volunteers, and sponsors.
"I think it's just people wanting to do more things as a community, and when they're happening, they see the hard work that all of our sponsors and volunteers have put into the event. I think people are starting to come out more and see that," said Kelsey Joseph, planning committee chair.
The Freedom 5K kicked off multiple other events with the Star-Spangled Spectacular, including live music, a drone show, and a firework show in the park.
