LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - Students have been working to build their character, leadership skills, and a better community during their school day. Welcome to the Heir Force Community School's "Builders Club" meeting, part of the Lima Kiwanis Club's youth programs.
Twenty students participate in the "Builders Club," with five from each of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Their core values are character building, leadership, inclusiveness, and caring—values students say are important for their future.
"It will help you build leadership," said Cale Hughes, president of the Heir Force Builders Club. "The core values are integrity, taking responsibility, and stuff like that. I think that is very good for the future. You can build responsibility, and show these things in your future jobs or clubs."

Dr. Willie Heggins, executive director of Heir Force Community School, added, "All these efforts are designed to give them opportunities to learn how to work together, understand teamwork, and, more definitively, create opportunities for them to understand the importance of community stewardship."
The club leads their school's food drive, volunteers at the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, and serves as pen pals with seniors at a local nursing home, among other activities. The Kiwanis sponsors Builders Clubs at all the Lima City School District middle schools.
