LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - It was a slow start to the Lima City Schools Summer Lunch Program on Monday.

It was the kick off to the school system's Summer Lunch Program, made possible in part by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Children from 1 to 18 years of age are able to get a hot meal Monday through Thursday through July 31st. School officials want people to understand this is for any child, not just Lima City School students.

We caught up with the Spartan Lunch Express at Lincoln Park where the mobile lunch ladies enjoy interacting with the kids.

"We just enjoy seeing how excited they are when we pull up in the big white truck, they usually they run towards us," said Jessica Baker, a Spartan Lunch Express driver. "First day, it might be a little slow, but it's going to pick up throughout the summer, and we just like seeing the kids."

There are eight different locations that the kids can get a meal.

Four school sites - Heritage, Independence, Unity, and Liberty Arts Magnet -  lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition, the Spartan Lunch Express mobile unit will stop at Lincoln Park from 11 to 11:20 a.m. and Faurot Park from noon to 12:20 p.m. All meals must be eaten on site and cannot be taken to go.

In partnership with the Children’s Hunger Alliance, shelf-stable meals will also be distributed at Lima West Apartments from 11 to 11:20 a.m. and Maplewood Apartments from 11:30 to 11:50 a.m.
