LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Superior Credit Union is helping feed families across western Ohio as food insecurity is on the rise.

Superior donated $25,000 to the West Ohio Food Bank Wednesday afternoon, a boost coming at a critical time, as the government shutdown has paused SNAP benefits for many families. The food bank says it registered over 100 new households at a distribution earlier in the week, and with the holidays approaching, they're seeing more families in need.

"Those individuals who have their SNAP delayed because they typically get it at the beginning of the month, are still facing hardships right now," said Tommie Harner, CEO of the West Ohio Food Bank. "Even prior to all of this happening, we have so many working poor families who are living paycheck to paycheck, relying on us, and now getting into the holiday season and towards the winter months, when the temps are cooler, the utilities are higher, and the cost of groceries is up, so many people are having to come to us just to get assistance and make sure they can feed their families. So donations like this are really just a blessing for us."

"The West Ohio Food Bank does a terrific job meeting the needs of our community, and there's a lot of extra financial pressure for a lot of families in our area, especially around this time of year, and we just wanted to show our support and hopefully take a little bit of pressure off those folks," said Kelsey Joseph, director of marketing for Superior Credit Union.

As the holidays near and many continue to wait for benefits to resume, the food bank says community support like this is what helps keep families fed.
