LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Around six million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and that number is expected to nearly double in the next 25 years.

West Central Ohio residents can join the fight against the disease by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 20 at Ottawa Metro Park.

The fundraising goal for the walk is $38,000. Money raised will support research and new treatments aimed at slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s and dementia in the early stages.

Organizers say the event is not only a fundraiser but also a source of encouragement for caregivers and loved ones who are navigating the Alzheimer’s journey.

“Because it allows caregivers the opportunity to be around a bunch of people who are all going through the same thing, and it's an opportunity to kind of remember those who didn't, you know, quite make it through the journey, and just be supported by those who are currently going through it,” said Marybeth Torsell, program manager for the Alzheimer’s Association of Northwest Ohio Chapter.

Lima’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place Sept. 20 at Ottawa Metro Park. Check-in begins at 9 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony and walk at 10 a.m.
