The home of one of the most memorable and famous Wapakoneta residents was honored on Nov. 26 with a special recognition.
Despite the cold and snowy weather, dozens of community members gathered in front of Neil Armstrong's boyhood home for an Ohio historical marker dedication.
For the past 30 years, current homeowner Karen Tullis said she has embraced the home's history. She has since converted Armstrong's old bedroom into an office featuring several displays honoring him. Tullis also said the home's history tied into her life's ambition.
“Well it’s really exciting because I was teaching Ohio history at the time and I’ve always loved history,” said Karen Tullis, owner of Neil Armstrong’s childhood home. “Because of that I found the house and didn’t know that it was Neil’s boyhood home when I bought it. It was not until after I made the bid on it. So that even made it more special- that It was going to be a house that would be apart of history.”
The marker, which took over a year to finalize, was made possible with the help of the Wapakoneta Rotary Club, Armstrong Air & Space Museum and Ohio History Connection.
This marks the 9th Ohio historical marker in Auglaize County. The Nov. 26 dedication was apart of the 50th anniversary of Armstrong's moonwalk.
