Auglaize County wants to make south western Wapokoneta better prepared for severe weather. The county is looking to put a weather siren on or near the Auglaize County Fairgrounds.
Auglaize County Emergency Management Director Troy Anderson says officials in the past have had to issue a tornado warning or severe weather warning during the fair.
However, no sirens in that portion of the city makes the evacuation process difficult.
"I'd say probably the last three times we've had to issue a tornado warning or a severe weather warning for winds. Then when it comes time for doing the evacuation, it's kinda hard getting the notice out to everybody at once," said Anderson.
Two possible locations for the sirens might be in front of the sheriff's communications tower on the fairgrounds, or at the Wapakoneta Water Treatment Plant just behind the grounds. However, one obstacle stands in the way of deciding the location.
"The things we have to take into consideration is the livestock. We want to make sure that we don't scare the livestock. We're looking and doing some studies just to see where is going to be the best place for it," said Anderson.
Anderson says he's hoping they can agree on a location by the end of June.
