ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) - The St. Marys Theater and Grand Opera House gave kids a lesson in line dancing as part of their "Second Saturdays are for Kids" program.
This is the second year of the program, with special shows and events being offered the second Saturday of each month. The program is funded by grants from the Parker Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council. Volunteers say the funds and the program help bring attention and garner support for the building.
"We've got a great mural from 1951 that shows the front of the theater packed with kids, and because the theater was shut down for so long, many young people really don't have a connection with it," said Doug Spencer, volunteer with the theater. "So this is a way to get that connection back of kids coming in."
Attendants spent their morning learning line dances to different songs. Instructor Kelly Kroeger said the event gives kids a break from the heat and a fun way to exercise.
"I have danced or taught line dancing for about 34 years now. I learned out in Oklahoma originally. And my Mom and I taught together in Delphos for many years," said Kroeger. "The kids need to get away from their phones today and take the time to get some exercise and have some fun.
More info about the events at the theater can be found at on the Grand Opera House website.
