WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) — The United States will celebrate its 250th birthday next year, and Auglaize County is already preparing to mark the milestone.
As part of the Heritage Trees: Planting History program under America 250 Ohio, a swamp white oak tree was planted at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds. Inspired by the Liberty Tree in Boston during the Revolutionary War, Ohio native white oak trees will be planted in all 88 Ohio counties to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial.
The tree not only honors the United States but also recognizes the region’s contribution to the country’s rich history.

"This tree planting is sort of the unofficial kickoff of our 250th celebrations," says Matt Staugler, Co-Chair of the America-250 Ohio Auglaize County Committee. "This sort of represents that story that Auglaize County has played in our nation's history from the first indigenous peoples who were here all the way up to Neil Armstrong landing on the moon. Those stories are here in Auglaize County, and we expect a lot of visitors as they sort of reflect on America's story to also come here and visit."
The Heritage Trees program launched in Lima on Arbor Day this past spring.
