Valentine’s hike highlights fitness and nature in Auglaize County

ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) — Sunshine helped offset chilly temperatures Sunday afternoon as people hit the trail for the Valentine’s hike along the Miami Erie Canal Towpath.

The hike was part of the Heritage Trails Park District’s  Cabin Fever Hiking series, a long-running monthly event that gives participants the chance to explore different sections of the historic canal towpath.

Those taking part in the Grand Lake Health System’s “Road to Fitness” earned points for completing the hike. Organizers say the event not only encourages physical activity, but also provides an opportunity for residents to experience local nature close to home.

“You don't have to drive far to experience some great wilderness and recreational opportunities outside. Auglaize County has those things right here, so you don't have to bring your wallet. You can spend some quality time with your family outdoors. And just today, while I was hiking, I saw two bald eagles. There's lots of people out enjoying the hike with their dog and their family, so it's a great event to participate in," says Terry McDonald, Heritage Trails Park District.

The Cabin Fever Hiking Series continues March 8 and April 12 at the Noble Township House, located at 16586 County Road 66A in St. Marys. Hikes run from 1 to 3 p.m.
