WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) — Wapakoneta's Summer Moon Festival officially lifted off Tuesday night with a special kickoff event.

"Wapakoneta by Moonlight" gave residents and visitors the opportunity to explore downtown with late-night shopping, dining, live music and historical walking tours. The event serves as a prelude to Wapakoneta's annual festival celebrating native son Neil Armstrong.

This year's Summer Moon Festival features food trucks, wiener dog races, a classic car show and the Downtown Moon Market, where more than 60 vendors will be set up. Organizers say this year's festival is packed with activities and expect thousands of people to visit Wapakoneta throughout the weekend.

“A lot of the class reunions, they come back for it, and it’s just one of those things where families come back. Families, you know, center, maybe, reunions around it so they can come back to town and just meet up with friends, have a good time downtown, reminisce and see what’s happened in Wapak,” says Tom Schlenker, "First on the Moon" Committee.
