It can hurt walking around outside with the wind chill in the double negatives - but how exactly does the cold affect your body?

We asked Brandon Fischer with Allen County Public Health to find out more. He says that the main thing that the cold does is it saps away your body heat.

"Colder takes that temperature of 98 degrees that your body tries to keep up at normal temperature, and with the difference of 120 - 150 degrees and air temperatures, at lease what it feels like, your heat is being taken away from your body faster," said Fischer, who is a PHEP Planner.

This could lead to hypothermia if your body temperature drops to below 95 degrees. The cold can also affect those that have a health condition like asthma or are very young or very old.

"There are additional problems for people with asthma - they may have additional trouble breathing with the colder air interacting with the mucus in their lungs, the elderly are more susceptible to hypothermia, just because their metabolism is slower they can’t generate as much body heat," Fischer said.

Of course, the biggest piece of advice that Fischer gave is to stay indoors whenever possible to stay safe and healthy - and wear appropriate clothing if going out.

"If you have to go out, just dress in layers, have at least two or three layers of something loose that can keep that temperature close to your body," said Fischer.
