WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) – The Wapakoneta community continues its annual tradition of making sure all kids have a special Christmas.

Nineteen years ago, the Children’s Hometown Holiday began as a way to provide memorable holiday experiences for area children. The free three-day event wrapped up this morning with a pancake breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Along with pancakes, families enjoyed face painting, games, a coloring contest and a visit from Santa, who handed out presents. The event is supported by donations from local businesses and individuals, along with more than 400 volunteers who help with everything from dressing up as characters to assisting Santa and preparing food.

“They put all this on. The Tea Party, The Race Car Breakfast, the fireworks, all the stuff that goes on like the parade. And every store, every store, has something they give the children. And it's just amazing. And here we are at the K of C breakfast, and lots of children here too to see Santa, sit on Santa's lap. But when you see the smiles on those little faces, that's what's important that makes my heart smile too," says Elaine Poppe, Founder of the Children's Hometown Holiday.

Poppe says the committee has already begun work on next year’s Children’s Hometown Holiday.
