Dance over drugs

Students at Independence Elementary School showed of their moves today as they wrap up another successful DEA Dance Program.

Director of the program Lyn Mulcahy says this was created to promote a drug free environment for students, "We talk about drug and alcohol resistance and using as a positive outlook for negative things."

The students met for 20 weeks once a week for an hour up until the day of their performance. And, while some students wish they would've had more time to practice their moves, they say they still enjoyed the program and everything it has to offer.

"There were a couple parts I got a little bit confused about but at the ending I was fine because I knew all the kids would know the song. It wasn't that bad I thought it was kind of cool," says 4th grade dance student, Austin Freytag.

Mulcahy says it's a lot of hard work but the positive impact it has on the students makes it all worth it

"When we're here after school teacher stop in and dance a little bit with us so I think the kids really enjoyed that and the students today were crazy about the performance so I hope that'll generate some interest for our program for next year," says Mulcahy.
