Longtime Allen County sheriff, retired Major, Larry Van Horn has died.
The 64 year old Van Horn died in Columbus Wednesday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency a few weeks ago while on duty handling security at the Allen County courthouse.
Van Horn had returned to work part-time for the sheriff's office.
Van Horn spent 34 years with the sheriff's office ending his career in 2005 as the head of the departments detective division.
He then spent some time as an investigator with the Allen County Coroner's office.
Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish says Allen County has not only lost an excellent cop with a wealth of knowledge, but he lost a good friend.
Crish says Van Horn worked for 4 sheriff's. Ed Fair, Charlie Harrod, Dan Beck and himself.
There will be no visitation or funeral service, Crish says later next week a memorial service will be held in Van Horn's honor at the FOP lodge.
