It was bittersweet but something that had to be done. That's how former Hawthorne golf course owner Dr. Gene Dugan described the sale of his landmark golf course .
The transaction officially took place last week but rumors of the sale have been swirling for years.
Dugan says he sold the golf course because none of his three daughters were interested in carrying on the duties associated with the family business. He says the maintenance of the course was just more than he was willing to continue.
The good news with the sale, is that Dugan got what he wanted. While he wouldn't disclose the actual selling price... What he really wanted was a local owner. Paul Schweiller has purchased the property.
Dugan says he had some outside offers. Some years ago Proctor and Gamble made him a generous offer but with no assurances that the golf course would remain open.
The new owner promises to keep the legacy of Dugan's father and mother John T. and Irene alive at the course. In addition there were some other provisions of the sale, other than the asking price such as taking care of family on the property.
Dugan says he and his wife will continue to live on the property.
The course was built by his father and opened in 1963.
World famous players such as Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino have played the course.
