ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - While Allen County has not seen an increase in chickenpox, surrounding counties have.
Local health officials say that there have been reported chickenpox pockets or clusters around the state. Allen County has not seen any but says parents should keep an eye on their children as symptoms of chickenpox can become very serious.
"The chicken pox not only can be on the skin, it can go into the throat, into the lungs and cause dehydration. It can cause inflammation around the brain. So there are serious complications from the virus," explained Deb Roberts, director of nursing at Allen County Public Health.
Health officials encourage parents to educate themselves about the chickenpox vaccine to make an educated decision about vaccinating their children.
