LIMA, OH (WLIO) - With the unofficial start of summer just days away, the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District is looking for funding to build a place where people can cool down during the hot months.
The park district decided in February to permanently close the beach at Ottawa Metro Park because it had become too costly and difficult to find lifeguards. All of the water features have been removed, and a sign will be going up soon to say it is closed. However, next to it will be another sign announcing a new splash pad will be coming soon, and Johnny Appleseed is looking for help to get that built.
"We put in an application from the Ohio State capital bill, really looking to see if there is any funding out there for that. We also have a park foundation that will be able to help a little bit with that, and potentially the park district," says Tyler Black, executive director of Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.
And their campground is gearing up for a full holiday weekend.
"Being Memorial Day weekend, the campground fills up really fast. It's still Tuesday, but honestly, by Thursday, if you don't have a site, you might be out of luck. But really, weekends at the campground at Ottawa Metro Park are always really busy. So, we are thankful for that. It's a great opportunity to get out and enjoy being outside. It looks like it is going to be an awesome weekend weather-wise," adds Black.
