LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Lima Senior High School welcomed a special visitor Thursday afternoon.

Students met and took photos with Sassy, a 5-month-old Highland calf being raised by agriculture and outdoor occupations instructor Tim Garmon. The program hopes Sassy will soon be adopted into its farm family and live at Spartan Farm, the school’s offsite learning facility. At the farm, agriculture students study animal science, plant science, landscaping and small engine repair. Garmon said Sassy would give students a hands-on way to learn animal science, along with other livestock already at the farm, including chickens, rabbits and ducks.

“My whole goal with the ag program is to teach kids not just about the farm. We’re more than just farming. We cover so many areas in agriculture,” Garmon said. “My hope and desire is to teach these kids how to work, and that’s the way I run my class.”

The agriculture and outdoor occupations program has about 40 students this year. Program leaders said bringing Sassy to campus is one way to spark interest and encourage more students to explore opportunities in agriculture.
