Lima Sertoma Club announces Jeremy Welker as "Firefighter of the Year"

Although, we know they don't do it for the awards, it's always nice to recognize those who serve our community.

The Lima Sertoma Club has honored one of Lima's finest as "Firefighter of the Year."

Jeremy Welker was given the award which recognizes those who have shown outstanding service above and beyond their normal duties. At the meeting Tuesday Welker said fellow first responders who have received the award have been outstanding, but that he is very thankful for the award.

He also said his main thing as "Firefighter of the Year" will be to promote the health and safety of firefighters. He is battling brain cancer and this may be his last year with the department. Welker said that he is humbled for the recognition.

"I think they did it because this is probably the last time that i can do it and i appreciate it very much. It'll be good," he said.

Welker says citizens should carefully consider their vote if there are any issues on the November ballot concerning firefighter safety.Â
