"One Life: The Mask of Lincoln" is a collection of portraits that illustrates how the invention of the camera changed the American political landscape forever. The exhibit will be brought to several public locations like schools and libraries across the county now through November. While Lincoln was not the first president to be photographed, experts say the number of portraits taken from before he took office until his assassination made citizens feel as though they knew him in a way no president had been known before.

The Lincoln portraits will also be on display on September 9th at 7 p.m. when the historical society hosts the presentation "Photography During the Civil War" at St. Paul United Church of Christ.

"You know, it wasn't just somebody in the White House, and you had to imagine what it was like. But you could see the strain on his face; you could understand what he was going through, and it really set the stage, probably for how presidents after him were documented in terms of photographs," explained Auglaize County Historical Society director Rachel Barber.
