LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — There was some sweet learning going on at Mclean Teddy Bear Park on Sunday as the Johnny Appleseed Park District held its Maple Festival. Families got to see the process of making maple syrup firsthand by traveling through the woods on the Maple Mile.

Not only could people learn how sap is gathered from local trees, but they also discovered how Native Americans and pioneers turned it into the sweet syrup. The park district believes events like Maple Fest connect people with the nature that is right in their backyard.

“It's always surprising to see the smiles on kids' faces and then to have the adults tell us, I had no idea that's what it was like. I never thought of that. It didn't occur to me. So, we are teaching our younger generations, but we're also bringing this information to everyone in the community and just impacting them in a meaningful way,” said Lindsey Gallaugher, naturalist, Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks District.

The park district is getting ready for a busy spring and summer. To learn more about what programs they have to offer, log on to the Johnny Appleseed website.
