LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Local high school students got a hands-on look at the many opportunities available in the healthcare field.
Mercy Health and Ohio State University at Lima partnered once again for Healthcare Futures Day, an event designed to inspire future healthcare professionals. Students from Wapakoneta, Columbus Grove and Lima Central Catholic explored the anatomy lab, viewed ultrasounds and learned about in-demand careers such as EMTs and nursing.
For students who already plan to go into healthcare—or those still considering it—the event offered a chance to see the wide range of options the field provides. High school students from around the region explored hands-on learning opportunities in healthcare during Mercy Health and Ohio State University–Lima’s Healthcare Futures Day.

“I want to be a surgical tech, and it kind of shows me different things that are not as much as a surgical tech and just things of being a nurse as well, or being an ultrasound, or just being like in cadaver labs and stuff like that. When people get to see things and experience kind of like a job shadow, you open your eyes a lot to what it can do to help you see things and experiencing things like this will help you after high school," said Mya Verhoff, a senior at Columbus Grove.
“It's so important for them to get this early exposure. Not only does it help them as they start making those important decisions for what comes next after high school, it also helps to build that relationship with the people that they may end up working with right here at St. Rita’s, so they're able to have those mentors and those good experiences early in their life,” said Suzy Troyer, manager of the Experience of Care Program at Mercy Health–St. Rita’s.
St. Rita’s hosts five Healthcare Futures Days each year, bringing in around 500 students to learn more about the medical field.
