COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) – Public school districts and local governments are keeping a close watch on Columbus, as state lawmakers plan to override Governor Mike DeWine’s vetoes on key property tax provisions.
The Ohio House is expected to reconvene on July 21st to revisit three specific budget vetoes. These include: allowing county budget commissions to reduce school and local government property taxes if they determine collections exceed what is necessary; eliminating the replacement tax levy provision available to school districts; and including certain tax levies when calculating the 20-mill floor for school funding.
But they are going to let the veto stand dealing with the carryover balance for school districts.
To override the vetoes, the measures would need approval from both the Ohio House and Senate.
DeWine said when he issued the vetoes that he hoped to collaborate with the Ohio General Assembly on a property tax relief plan, and warned that the issues he vetoed would hurt school districts.
