COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) – Ohio lawmakers are returning to work after their summer break, with property tax relief at the top of their fall agenda.

Republicans in the General Assembly included property tax changes in the recent two-year state budget this summer, but Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed the measures, saying they would negatively impact school districts. He created a group to examine property tax reforms that would give property owners relief without harming entities that rely on property tax funding.

The Republicans in the House and Senate overturned one of the vetoes, “that bans school districts and local governments to use replacement or emergency levies on future requests for money.” They could also overturn other vetoes this fall, but they need a three-fifths majority to do so.

DeWine’s group is expected to release its property tax plan by the end of the month.
