Open House held at Lima Memorial Cancer Institute

An open house at the Lima Memorial Cancer Institute on Eastown road gave people a chance to see leading edge technology in radiation therapy and to meet with the Lima Memorial Health System Oncology team.

Darlene Herriott, a six year survivor of breast cancer is impressed with the facility.

“This is nice. This is where I did my treatment and the improvements are awesome.“ said Herriott.

The gem of the facility of the Varian Truebeam Linear Accelerator, which can effectively treat cancer anywhere in the body where radiation is indicated, including lung, breast, prostate and head and neck.

“We have put in the Truebeam which is one of the newest models of linear accelerators in cutting edge technology and again the staff that’s trained to use it is what makes the technology so special. We’re very very lucky to have this technology in our community. They don’t have to travel far to get it and we still work closely with other centers if we have to but the ability to treat patients here and not send them away, that’s a great thing.“ said Cheryl Nagy, director of Oncology Services.

“It’s cutting edge. Our linear accelerator is state of the art technology in terms of limiting the number of tests they have to do, the number of times they have to have the dosage. So it’s a real positive overall result for the patient.“said Mike Swick, President and CEO of Lima Memorial Health System.

The facility also includes an updated area where patients can receive chemotherapy treatments and there’s also a new CT scanner that works in conjunction with the Truebeam accelerator to pinpoint tumors more accurately.
