LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Bees do it, bats do it, and even birds do it. We're talking about pollinating — and some young students are learning just how vital it is to our ecosystem.

Pollinator Party teaches kids the importance of nature’s helpers

The camp teaches children about the animals in our area that help plants and flowers thrive.

Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District is hosting a “Pollinator Party” day camp this week, introducing 5- and 6-year-old campers to the crucial role of pollinators through hands-on activities and nature hikes.

The camp teaches children about the animals in our area that help plants and flowers thrive. Whether it's insects like moths and butterflies, birds, or even bats, pollinators are essential. In fact, three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants and about 35% of the world’s food crops depend on them. Not only is it important to have pollinators, but also to maintain habitats where they can live.

“It's very important to have spaces for pollinators to thrive, lack of habitat for them. So, habitats with lots of different kinds of flowers is contributing to their decline. So, making spaces for them, growing plants that they can use is so important,” says Marie Walton, Naturalist with Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District.

In addition to pollinators, younger campers this summer can also learn about reptiles and amphibians. Older campers will have opportunities to explore archery and kayaking. For more information, visit Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District’s website.
