ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - It is that time of year for dog owners to purchase dog tags for their four-legged friends.

Reminder: Get your dog tags for your four-legged friend before February price jump

From now until January 31st, you can buy a one-year dog tag for $22.

Allen County Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer reminds people that from now until January 31st, you can buy a one-year dog tag for $22. That price jumps up to $44 beginning February 1st as a penalty is incurred.

Shellhammer says many will receive a renewal reminder in the mail, and you can put a check or money order inside the self-addressed envelope. The mail route has about a two-week turnaround window. You can buy one online through the Allen County Dog Warden's website or visit the Allen County Auditor's Office or the county dog control facility in person. She does remind that credit cards are not accepted in person.

Through purchasing a dog tag, Shellhammer says dogs can be easily reunited with owners should they get lost.

Through purchasing a dog tag, Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer says dogs can be easily reunited with owners should they get lost.

"It is so important to have that dog tag and not in the kitchen drawer. It's important to have it on the dog. Dogs accidentally get out all the time. Believe me, we see them! Sometimes, they're repeat offenders, especially huskies. Huskies like to get loose and run. If we end up with them with a tag on it, we can find where the dog lives immediately and return it. Never even has to come to our office. Or if somebody finds a tag, they can go to the Allen County, Ohio Auditor's Office and search the tag, and they can get the dog back to the owner," stated Julie Shellhammer, Allen County Dog Warden.

Shellhammer also adds the facilities and services they provide are funded through the money collected with dog tag purchases.
