For the last two weeks, Schoonover Lake has been drained to begin construction on a new dam project.

The Lima city engineer said the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has called for a dam reconstruction at the lake, and the work is underway. The $2 million project will create a new dam, a bicycle pump track, an ADA fishing pier and a rebuilt north island with an armed services memorial. It's being paid for through grants as well as city funds. The project is expected to be wrapped up in November, and the lake will rise once the dam is completed. City officials say dam reconstruction will mean less erosion and should prevent any more blowouts.

"We expect the bicycle pump track to be a draw for the younger kids," said Kirk Niemeyer, city engineer. "It's right at the end of the bike path. So that's going to be something new for the community as well as the ADA fishing area. People love to fish Schoonover. So that just gives a better opportunity for those with mobility issues to get out closer to the lake."

Fish were a concern but Niemeyer said a majority flowed into the Ottawa River or were caught soon after the lake was stocked back in March.
