The Shawnee School Board says they are going to wait a year before going to voters for additional money.
The board has pulled a 4.2 mill tax levy from the May ballot which would raise more money for operating expenses. With the recent property assessments in Shawnee School District going up, the board is going to see more money coming in from current tax levies on the books. With that money and a renewal levy that passed in November, the board decided they could operate in the black without a new levy for now.
“We didn’t think it was appropriate to go to our tax base and our taxpayers and ask for money to create some reserves until we really need it So next year, we are going to really need it. We are hopefully going to talk to a lot of our taxpayers and our interested people and get them involved over the next year and coming up with some good ideas to support our next levy,” said Clay Balyeat, President of the Shawnee School Board.
Balyeat says it’s important to communicate with voters over the next year to let them know where the school district is financially and how the board is going to be fiscally responsible with their money.
