Sheriff has concerns about exploding rifle targets

Sheriff Al Solomon warning residents about an increase in calls concerning Tannerite. The exploding rifle targets are legal, but they're causing quite a bit of concern in Auglaize County and other parts of the country.

The Auglaize County Sheriff's Office has taken several complaints recently about the substance. The targets are purchased at shooting supply stores. However, when shot with certain calibers, the targets are designed to explode. Sheriff Solomon says even though shooting the targetsĀ areĀ legal-- if the targets are detonated at night or in high quantities-- people could be charged with disorderly conduct. The office has received calls about such large amounts of Tannerite being detonated, that neighbors windows are being rattled.

One person was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct last year after the sheriff's department received repeated complaints. Sheriff Solomon says he doesn't want to infringe on people's rights to shoot or hunt. However, some of the explosions are becoming quite large and dangerous.
