LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Lima City Schools students engaged in some learning for a biology lab and tried to not burst their own bubbles.

Sophomore students at Lima Senior participated in a lab to educate them on the cellular membrane represented by bubbles. Through a hands-on style of learning in the lab, the students imitated the cell membrane with the bubbles and replicated the process of cellular division. They also recreated certain functions of human cells such as cell organs & proteins that allow things to enter and exit the cell by using threads.

"So basically, you take a straw, and it's like a square and you take it and you pull it up, and then you hold it to see what can go through and what can't go through and that's pretty much it. And then sometimes you can blow bubbles with it and it can see like put stuff through the bubbles and it can like float inside of it so it's pretty cool," said Shawn Gadson, sophomore at Lima Senior.
"You can definitely see the growth in the students when they're able to link what we're talking about in class with something that they're able to touch and do. At the beginning of the year I do an inventory, are they a visual learner, an auditory learner or a kinesthetic learner, and most of them are kinesthetic, so we really try to get them active and doing things in class," said Dawn Frenz, biology teacher Lima City Schools.
There are about 100 trillion cells in the human body and it's important for the students to understand the makeup of their own bodily cells & how they can affect their daily lives through a fun experimental activity.
