St. Gerard students learn "What's in the Lake"

The Ottawa River Coalition showed first graders what kinds of creatures are living in the river Friday afternoon.

The St. Gerard students were given the chance to explore the stream and catch a few insects to identify and learn more about. An assessment sheet of what they found was filled out to figure out the water quality in the stream. The idea is to get kids interested in the river now, to be more protective of it in the future.

"Our ultimate goal is for them to foster a concern for our river system as children, and as they grow into adults, they have a care and concern for that natural resource into the future," said Beth Seibert, coordinator for the Ottawa River Coalition.

The kids also got a look at the turbine pumps that pull water from the river.
