A policy change at the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities will benefit families receiving support services.
Superintendent Theresa Schnipke updating the Family and Children First Council on the changes in support services dollars that families they serve can receive. Previously clients families had to re-apply every six months for funding and if they didn't use it they were not allowed to participate in the next round. Now it will be a one-time application and it will be a tiered system with funding based upon the age of the individual.
"This all came about because the waiting list rule was changed last year and there were 40,000 people in the State of Ohio on DD waiting lists and they wanted to get to the point where what is your need and what can we do about it? So we're trying to change the conversations, you know what is the need you have and what can we do to help you?" commented Theresa Schnipke, Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities superintendent.
The funds come from local tax levy dollars and state and federal rules apply for their use.
