Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating

The holidays can bring along stress about keeping up that healthy lifestyle.

St. Rita's Medical Center Dietitian, Becky Niekamp, said you can stick to your health plan if you stay mindful. During the holidays we are faced with huge dinners and large spreads at parties. Niekamp recommends to monitor portion sizes and keeping your variety balanced. If you are bringing a dish to the party, bring a healthier option. If you are traveling this season, it's a good idea to pack some snacks or mini meals before filling up at that holiday party.

"A lot of times portion sizes can be a problem or difficult," said Niekamp. "Making sure we're staying active and getting that regular exercise for our routines. Making sure we're not skipping meals is important too so it doesn't lead us to over-eat."

Niekamp recommends almonds and fruit as a healthy pre-meal snack.
